Your Legal
Marriage Ceremony *
* Whether or not
you are having a legal marriage ceremony, you can
still have a wedding. The information on this page
includes information about legal marriage.
After many years of activism by countless numbers of
people, and the expenditure of $122 million by the
Australian Government, marriage equality became a
reality in December 2017.
Nothing gives me greater joy than being the
celebrant for couples previously unable to marry
because they failed to fit into the narrow
definition of "a man and a woman" which, up until
then, had been the legal requirement for marriage in
this country. Even after all of the same-sex
marriages I've solemnised, I still get goose-bumps
when I say the new definition of legal marriage (as
I am required to do, before you make your vows)
Marriage, according to law in
Australia, is the union of two people,
to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily
entered into, for life.
And I've been known to choke
up a little when I declare that you are legally
married!
When you engage me as your
celebrant, I can guarantee that you will have a
wedding ceremony
- that is romantic, light-hearted,
engaging, and entertaining
- that you and your guests will enjoy
- that will cause a few tears (both from
laughter and from genuine emotion)
- that includes compassion for your nervous
feelings
- that gives priority to your needs
- that is authentic to you
- that is notable for a complete lack of
meaningless padding - every word is meaningful
- that includes elements that no-one in your
circle of friends has done before
- that surprises and delights your guests
- that is a heart-warming experience that
everyone will remember and talk about for
years
